After Benjamin Percy delivered Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red, he’s back this week with a Boba Fett one-shot limited to the same colors. Extra-sized, the one-shot serves as a day in the life of the bounty hunter and how making deals and narrowly surviving is part of the job.
Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White & Red #1 offers up a heaping plate of everything you want in a Boba Fett story. There are gun battles, flying portions with his iconic ship, and close-quarters combat. There are also intense meetings where choices need to be made quickly, or he’ll be thrown out an airlock.
For an extra-sized issue, Percy keeps the pace up with twists and turns. It’s never boring, although one could want for more Boba Fett character work. Instead, he’s his to-the-point self with little chatter. For purists, this makes sense, but if he’s getting the central focus a bit more about him, it could have gone a long way.
That said, the use of Empire, alien gangsters, and pirates is smartly done. The number of scene changes keeps the narrative feeling fresh and interesting.
Drawn by Chris Allen, the story looks great, although the red isn’t used for blood like in other Marvel projects in this line, but as background and emphasis. That makes some scenes a little hard to understand quickly, but if you give it some time, the detail and use of red is quite unique. Red is also used for Boba Fett’s helmet, which is a given, but anyone looking for adult violence won’t find any here. That’s because it’s part of the Star Wars line, although Allen gets to draw a gnarly arm break by Boba Fett.
If you’re looking for Boba Fett looking cool as hell, there’s plenty here to sink your teeth into. We’ve got him skulking, jumping, shooting, and diving. In one of the more interesting scenes, Boba Fett doesn’t back down when he speaks to an Empire captain after being captured. Boba Fett has seen it all, and Allen gives him the swagger he deserves.
Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White & Red #1 is a stylish, extra-sized one-shot that delivers everything fans expect from the galaxy’s most iconic bounty hunter. While the story favors action and atmosphere over deep character work, Percy and Allen craft a high-energy tale full of tension, swagger, and striking black, white, and red imagery that makes Boba Fett look as cool as ever.
