Vault Comics has announced the long-awaited return of Barbaric with its fifth story arc, Barbaric: The Long Death. The hit fantasy series, co-created by writer Michael Moreci and artist Nathan Gooden, has become one of Vault’s best-selling titles since its debut—and this time, Gooden rejoins the creative team fresh off his breakout success on Big Rig with Post Malone.
The returning lineup also includes series regulars Fabi Marques on colors, Jim Campbell on letters, and Tim Daniel on design. Together, the team promises a blood-soaked continuation that pushes Owen, Soren, and the ever-drunken Axe further than ever before.
“So excited that Barbaric is back once again,” said Moreci. “The stakes have never been bigger for Owen, Soren, and Axe—we’re digging deeper into each of their pasts, which will inevitably inform their futures. A lot of changes are in store and, as always, it’s going to be epic, it’s going to be bloody, it’s going to be Barbaric!”
Gooden added that returning to Barbaric has been a chance to bring new skills and energy to the book after working on Big Rig. “The thing that has me most excited for the return is the addition of a new character that is unbelievably funny but important to the back story of our heroes Owen and Soren. Mike Moreci has really upped the stakes with action and drama pouring out on almost every page.”
Since its launch, Barbaric has sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide and was named one of the best comics of 2021 by outlets including Entertainment Weekly, Thrillist, CBR, and Comics Beat. The series follows Owen, a cursed barbarian doomed to do good, and his bloodthirsty, wisecracking axe as they carve their way through monsters, cultists, and giants in a mythic world.
Barbaric: The Long Death #1 arrives in comic shops this December, complete with a lineup of variant covers by Pete Carroll, Jim Mahfood, Luana Vecchio, Corin Howell, and Brett Bean.
