Dan Jurgens recreates his iconic ‘Death of Superman’ cover for Godzilla’s shocking demise in ‘GODZILLA’ #6!

The end begins January 7th.

The King of the Monsters is dead—long live the King of the Monsters.

The shocking event arrives January 7, 2026, in GODZILLA #6 from writer Tim Seeley and artist Nikola Čižmešija, marking a massive turning point in IDW’s hit Kai-Sei Era series. The issue will depict the death of Godzilla himself, a moment so monumental that comics legend Dan Jurgens (The Death of Superman) has crafted a jaw-dropping “Death of” homage cover to mark the occasion.

“When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” Jurgens said. “I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great fun to be able to contribute!”

The event is not being taken lightly. As Aaron John Gregory, Godzilla Product Development Manager, explained, the team knew the story had to live up to its colossal premise:

“Allowing IDW to ‘kill’ Godzilla only six issues in to the new Kai-Sei Era series just goes to show how much trust TOHO International has in both rock-star writer Tim Seeley and Eisner-winning Godzilla editor Jake Williams,” Gregory said. “In ’92, as a young teenager I waited in a long line to buy Superman #75, and was blown away by the consequential brutality in those pages. I can tell you that the incredible team behind our new Kai-Sei Era of Godzilla have delivered on that level—with all the electrifying excitement and pummeling panache you’ve come to expect in this series. You may need a kaiju-sized Kleenex.”

GODZILLA #6 will feature multiple covers, including:

  • Cover A by Nikola Čižmešija

  • Cover B by Baldemar Rivas

  • Cover C by Ito (also available as a 1:25 full art variant)

  • Cover D “Death of” Variant by Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, and Glenn Whitmore

But in true comic book fashion—death isn’t the end.

Coming in February 2026, GODZILLA #7 from Seeley and artist Hendry Prasetya will unleash Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla — a version of the monster freed from his physical form and evolved into something beyond comprehension.

“Comics should be insane,” said editor Jake Williams. “And personally, I can’t think of a more insane way to end arc 1 of the first ongoing Godzilla series in over a decade than KILLING GODZILLA. For anyone waiting to check out this series—now’s the time to jump on. We’re delivering a Godzilla unlike any other, and finally making good on our promise to showcase ‘a boy with the power of Godzilla.’”

And for Toho International, the move embodies the company’s creative philosophy:

“Our goal is always to expand and reimagine the Godzilla mythology in bold and meaningful ways,” said Kristin Parcell, General Manager of Toho International. “The IDW comics line exemplifies that vision, offering stories that challenge expectations, captivate fans, and continue to evolve the legacy of the King of the Monsters.”

Between the shocking death, the upcoming transformation, and the legacy of an icon reborn, GODZILLA #6 promises to shake comics—and the kaiju kingdom—to their core.

The end begins January 7th.
