Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #5 drops Miles Morales, and by extension, the audience, into a chaotic fight. Not only is he racing to save his sister Billie so he can travel back home, but he also has to deal with Emmauel da Costa, the final member of the Maker’s Council who’s been draining the energy from mutants and now seeks to do the same to Billie in order to free the Maker from his prison.
There’s another issue plaguing Miles: the memories of the original Ultimate Universe, which was destroyed during Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic’s Secret Wars. Cody Ziglar and Deniz Camp finally address this, and to say it’s a big moment is an understatement. So is the moment where the Ultimates task Miles with taking a series of “origin boxes” back to his universe, which no doubt will lead to the creation of new Marvel heroes. Plenty of series tease that they’ll have game-changing moments, but this is one of the few that’s actually living up to that promise.
Ziglar and Camp also put Miles through the proverbial ringer in this issue. He’s pushing himself to the limit fighting Emmanuel, and what’s worse, he’s doing it on his own. Even his new Vibranium-enhanced suit takes a beating at the hands of Emmanuel’s army of powers. Combine that with the reveal of his past history, and it’s safe to say that this is the cherry on top of Miles’ not-so-great visit to Earth-6160. Like any good Spider-Man story, we get to see him overcome great odds, and finally be reunited with his sister.

Jonas Scharf pushes his artwork to the limit in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #5, filling the pages with imagery both compelling and disturbing. Big moments, like the Ultimates swooping in for the rescue or Miles triggering his “Venom Max” mode, are given the splash pages they deserve. Emmauel, on the other hand, is probably one of the creepiest beings in the Maker’s Council. As he starts absorbing more and more powers, his body grows to a grotesque size while his face takes on a demonic visage. It’s utterly frightening, and shows that Miles is in for the fight of his life.
Another sequence has Scharf recreating certain panels from the original Ultimate Comics Spider-Man run starring Miles, showcasing his entire history. If you haven’t read any Miles Morales comics or only know Miles from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, this sequence would be all you need to know what he’s about. It’s also visually striking thanks to Edgar Delgado, who utilizes a light blue filter that makes Scharf’s artwork pop.
Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #5 brings Miles Morales’ Earth-6160 visit to an end, while also sowing seeds for the future. Marvel has promised that the fallout will affect both universes, starting in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #39 and The Ultimates #17 (which are both out this week.) Its most significant impact is showcasing how Miles has grown as a character since the end of the original Ultimate Universe, and proves that no matter what Earth he’s on, he’ll live up to the legend of Spider-Man.
