Super Sonic Monthly #2: Lore drops, fan favorites, and future teases

Get an inside look at all things ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ via the IDW editorial team. They answer your questions!

Welcome back, speedsters — Super Sonic Monthly #2 is here, and this edition is stacked with reveals, character deep-dives, and future teases straight from the Sonic Editorial team! This month’s questions unlocked some major insights into the road to Issue #100, including a Tangle & Whisper mini-arc that dives into the mystery of the stolen Chaos Emeralds, new worlds waiting in the wings after Scattered Pieces, and even which member of the Chaotix is secretly the most fun for artists to draw (spoiler: Vector supremacy is real).

We dig into evolving relationships — Sonic & Amy fans get a thoughtful update, Belle supporters can celebrate her major role in Issues #84–86, and Shadow stans get the definitive answer on why the “Ultimate Lifeform” couldn’t outrun the Metal Virus. There’s also our first hint at how Sage will fold into the IDW universe and what her connection to Belle might mean for both characters moving forward.

This edition also celebrates the fandom itself: from fan art in the back pages to standout reactions to brand-new characters like Soleil/Lunar. And yes… we even go there on the eternal question: Is Dr. Starline really dead?

Whether you’re here for lore, character teases, worldbuilding hints, or just the fun of imagining who you’d least want as a roommate (the editorial team makes a strong case for Tangle), this month’s installment is bursting with the enthusiasm and inside info that make the IDW Sonic community so special.

On top of all that, we’ve got an exclusive preview of Sonic the Hedgehog #83 (Out December 24th) along with a first-look at the retailer incentive 1:15 cover for Sonic the Hedgehog #86 by Nathalie Fourdraine! Be sure to get your preorders in for issue #84 (you have until December 15th!).

Let’s jump in — full speed ahead!

– Freddy The Savage asks: Are there any plans for another Tangle and Whisper comic, as well as to bond much closer than ever? (The two are just amazing characters and excellent roommates.)

Sonic Editorial: While there aren’t currently any plans for a solo miniseries dedicated to Tangle and Whisper, we absolutely agree that those two are awesome characters! The importance of their friendship and the depth of the trust they have in each other is definitely something we want to continue to focus on. As the Road to 100 keeps developing, you can expect a mini-arc where Tangle and Whisper team up to discover some crucial information about  how the Chaos Emeralds have been stolen, who has taken them, and why.

– FunFloof the Cartoon asks: Glass Hill and Turtleshell Island were mentioned during the Metal Virus saga, and then made their debut officially in the Scattered Pieces arc. Since they were also mentioned during Metal Virus, will we ever get to see Pine Grove Village and Cascade City?

Sonic Editorial: It’s always possible! Our writers are always excited to take the story to new places, both narratively and location-wise, and introducing new settings is one way we can continue to expand and develop Sonic’s world in the comics. New places come with new characters, cultures and conflicts, so even though we might not see Pine Grove Village or Cascade City (which is also mentioned in the Chaotix Special!) immediately, they’re in our back pocket!

– Acquainted Guy asks: I had a question for the artists regarding Team Chaotix, who would you say is the member you enjoy drawing the most? Personally, I utterly adore how Vector’s drawn in these comics, he’s so expressive & looks amazing!

Sonic Editorial: Oh, this is such a good question! We’ve passed this over to our team, so here’s what one of our artists have to say!

“I’ve definitely warmed up to Vector over time! He’s probably my favorite now out of the Chaotix. There are a lot of fun expressions you can make with him. I don’t like drawing his chains though haha.” – Min Ho Kim

– Freddy The Savage asks: Will Sonic and Amy ever expand their relationship to be a deeper one, one day in the IDW comics?

Sonic Editorial: Sonic and Amy’s friendship will always continue to evolve, just as our friendships do! As we approach Issue 100, we can reflect on how Amy has proven herself to be a capable fighter and leader, while Sonic has shown his empathetic side. Strengthened by hardships, this core friendship, along with Knuckles and Tails, truly loves one another and will do anything to protect each other!

– MSPNova asks: With Belle going off to explore the world with Motobud, will she still be a series regular? Belle is my favourite character in all of Sonic media, who means a lot to me, and I’d love to still be able to keep up with her adventures for a very long time.

Sonic Editorial: Belle is fantastic, and it’s really special when you find a character who resonates with you. Given that she’s your favorite, we’re very excited to let you know that Belle is a major character in the upcoming arc of STH #84-86, so you’ll be seeing more of her quite soon! Even though we’re balancing a large cast and won’t always be following her story, Belle is an important member of the IDW comics and we have no intention of losing track of her.

– MSPNova asks: There have been many stories with a huge pool of characters, and each has gotten a lot of time to shine. What would you say is the most challenging part of choosing characters for a story?

Sonic Editorial: When our writers bring us stories, they are usually either pitching for a specific book where key characters are already decided (such as an anniversary issue) or they’re sending in story ideas that they are really excited for and would like to make happen. We try to give our writers as much freedom as possible, but the characters involved definitely depend on what makes sense for the plot of each arc (a mystery plot might be a good fit for the Chaotix), what makes sense for the character’s development (Whisper and the Diamond Cutters needed to be the ones to handle Mimic), and where we last left the characters in continuity (Rough and Tumble revealed to have turned the tables on Clutch after being his minions for awhile).

Blaze and Silver are from outside of Sonic’s world/timeline, so they only show up under specific (dire) circumstances. Surge and Kit are fantastic characters that have undergone a lot of growth since their first appearance, so we want to make sure that their next arc is challenging them and giving them new opportunities to keep pushing forward.

– FunFloof the Cartoon asks: Is there a location from the Sonic games that the team would like to see incorporated into the comics? Any place that hasn’t been used yet?

Sonic Editorial: Roulette Road from Casino Park has always been such a cool level design from the games! Wait, I think that might just make an appearance in the comics soon…

– Sam asks: If you had to spend a day being roommates with one Sonic character, who would you want it to be and why?

Sonic Editorial: Oh man, that’s a good question. Personally, I would pick Tangle – she immediately charmed me when I first started reading the comics! I tend to be more similar to Whisper in my social life, and many of my real-life friends are optimistic and extroverted yappers to balance me out, so I’m pretty familiar with that dynamic already. Spending a day with her would be a lot of fun!

– Noah asks: If Shadow is the “Ultimate Lifeform”, why did the metal virus infect him?

Sonic Editorial: Shadow is a very powerful and confident character who trusts his own assessment of a situation over anyone else’s. Due to his unique abilities and skills, he believed that he would not be affected by Dr. Eggman’s Metal Virus at all. As a result, when he was faced with a hoard of Zombots in issue #19, he charged right into defeating them without considering that he could be infected and without leaving himself an escape route. It was this arrogance that led to his infection. With extremely strong characters like Shadow, sometimes his conflicts arise from his own actions, since there aren’t many external forces that can give him trouble!

– Nathan asks: What’s the most exciting thing about starting to implement Sage into the world of Sonic IDW?

Sonic Editorial: Sage is a character that IDW has been planning to introduce to the comics for awhile (we heard you guys about wanting to see her comics debut!) and we finally have the right story arc at the right time, which is awesome. One thing I’m extremely excited about is the connection between Sage and Belle. They’re both Dr. Eggman’s daughters in a way, but under very different circumstances. Since they have such different relationships with him as a father, that can’t help but impact how they interact with each other as well.

– Scribbs asks: What has been the best fandom reaction to something you(the writers and artists) have written or drawn for the comics?

Sonic Editorial: Well, we can only speak on behalf of ourselves, the editors, but we have really enjoyed seeing people fall in love with our little acrobatic sugarglider this past arc! Soleil/Lunar was a really fun character to see come to life over months of hard work, and it’s been a blast seeing people draw fanart and make incredible cosplays and connect to a character we helped create!

– Lanette Lassiter asks: How are other Sonic fans able to make the artwork for the comic?

Sonic Editorial: The Sonic fanbase is incredibly creative and skilled across so many mediums of art, but we do love seeing drawings in our inbox! Fans of all ages and drawing expertise are always welcome to submit artwork marked “OK TO PRINT” to our email address [email protected] for a chance to be published in the back of the IDW Sonic comics! For those aspiring to be approved by Sega to draw the comics, that’s a more lengthy and complicated process, but we’re really lucky to have lots of talented and dedicated fan artists who have applied to become official comics contributors.

– Lanette Lassiter asks: Is Dr. Starline really dead?

Sonic Editorial: Who can say? …Oh, we can? Dang.

– Ames asks: The Phantom Masked Rider – will he return?

Sonic Editorial: There are no current plans to bring back the Phantom Rider! With Clutch’s empire destroyed, Sonic has moved on to investigating the missing Emeralds. Although maybe he still has the outfit tucked away somewhere!

– Matyssey asks: How much are you limited by the rules of the Sonic canon when you have to think about or write a story?

Sonic Editorial: I don’t believe that we’re limited by the rules of the world, I think they just force us to get creative! Every world has rules and limitations (as much as I wish I could fly), but that doesn’t mean that the possibilities are any less interesting!

And that’s a wrap on the second edition of Super Sonic Monthly. Wondering about submitting a question? Right now, we’re working through over 200 questions submitted in the first call for questions! A new call for questions will return, but not for a few more months! With that said, enjoy exclusive preview art below!
