‘It: Welcome to Derry’ episode 8 review: A bloody path to freedom?

Pennywise is looking for blood and freedom in the season finale of It: Welcome to Derry.

The season of It: Welcome to Derry came to a conclusion. Instead of the entity going back into hibernation for another 27 years, it found a way to escape it’s cage thanks to the military. Now, a brave group of people brought together must prevent It from unleashing terror in the greater world.

The finale has that epic feel. Tensions were already high following “The Black Spot,” but things ratchet to an even higher level. While much of the series seems localized, the many shots of the mists spreading through the community adds to the grandeur. The production value of the special effects develop an ominous tone as Pennywise begins to wreak havoc. The mist itself adds an aura of mystery due to the limited visibility and creates striking visuals such as the circus wagon out on the ice. It’s as if eyes are watching you from a distance.

It: Welcome to Derry delivers other memorable moments throughout. The milk truck scene is a lighter scene before the main conflict. It’s almost like watching the gears move inside Marge’s head as she thinks through what to do. In a more heroic nature, Hallorann’s use of his powers are psychedelic. Then, his mental battle with Pennywise is so deceiving that it convincingly tricks the clown. How Hallorann is found it is so clever and quick, but at least he redeems himself from the questionable acts he’s done for the military.

But in the end, the series is all about the young protagonists confronting their fears and the entity. It only make sense that it takes them working together to save the day. The suspense builds while others keep Pennywise occupied, although the empty gun magazine is used one too many times to give false hope. There is even an old friend rolling in on their figurative white horse, with plenty of attitude to spare, to help. Sure it’s a little corny, but fitting so the vibes help maintain the moment.

The connections to the films introduced have mixed results. We already know Will has ties to characters in the movies, but we also discover Marge’s relationship to one of the members of the Losers Club. It’s interesting because it shows that the battle with Pennywise is truly a generational conflict. However, it also feels unnecessary and a cheap attempt at fan service. On the other hand, the closing scene is a cool little primer and transition into the first film.

The epilogue also increases the cheese factor making the ending a little less satisfying. Rich’s funeral gives the character a proper sendoff, but is melodramatic with dry dialog. The unimaginative writing continues as we explore the fates of the other characters. Some are a wink and a nod to their future like Hallorann while others result in surprising and unbelievable decisions that any person with common sense would not make. But at least it fits into the continuity.

The least appealing aspect is that It: Welcome to Derry opens the door to another season. The ending includes the words “Chapter 1.” Combine that with the Marge reveal and how Pennywise experiences time, there is a possibility the show could continue during a different era and a different group of kids battling the entity. There have been mentions of other attempts at destroying the pillars. It’s fine this one time, and the season has been entertaining, but how much more could the series add to the mythology without being repetitive?

“Winter Fire” delivers big special effects, fun memorable moments, and a dramatic showdown. Unfortunately, the cheesy epilogue and questionable future detract from the episode.

The production value and special effects match the grandeur of the finale.
Great moments of humor, heroism, and scenes that reinforce the togetherness of the young protagonists.
The epilogue is cheesy, melodramatic, and filled with unbelievable character choices.
