Nightwing decapitated someone?! What?! Holy guacamole, Batman! No, don’t worry, it’s all just seemingly a sleight of hand by Zanni to trick the people of Blüdhaven to turn against our hero. But what he has failed to understand is that he is wildly misinformed on the mental stability of Nightwing. Pushing him into a corner is one thing, he can (and will) put up emotional walls. Now that the innocent youths of Blüdhaven are in danger, all bets are off. In fact, Dick Grayson is preparing to lay everything he is on the line this time. And this is one of those rare times in comics where the catchphrase “they will never be the same afterwards” might actually apply here. As a result, Nightwing #133 is a relatively intense story that maintains engagement through the mystery of what exactly Nightwing has planned for taking down Zanni.

This entire issue has an overwhelming sense of foreboding over it, and it frankly rocks. if you’re a little tired of seeing Nightwing win everything with the power of friendship or dumb luck, then Dan Watters’ run is just what the doctor ordered. Throughout his time on the series, we have seen those around Nightwing begin to pull away from him one by one, until all that feels left is just him and Barbara. But this issue creates a situation when Nightwing is truly on his own – and he might be for the foreseeable future, too. As a result of this darker tonal shift, I find that this issue feels significantly more captivating. By ramping things up towards what’s sure to be an epic showdown between Nightwing and Zanni, Dan Watters continues to create a story full of enough suspense to leave the reader desperate to find out what happens next.
Artist V. Ken Marion steps in for artistic duties this month and delivers a dynamic issue perfectly fitting the tone of the story. Marion’s style is rather nostalgic and feels a bit similar to some art from The New 52, thanks to things like sharp yet jagged linework and thick shadows. While the story doesn’t have much action going on in it, this hardly feels relevant considering how fluid each page feels like it connects to the prior. By having an almost seamless page to page transition, the story’s script feels perfectly thought-out and is better able to flourish as a result. Veronica Gandini continues to deliver splendid colors to this series. This issue’s sharp and intense colors help elevate the thriller-like undertones that push this comic more towards a suspense/horror story. Altogether, this is a well-drawn issue from cover to cover.

Nightwing #133 is another great entry in the series that finally sees Nightwing take action against Zanni. What that action might be and what repercussions it will have are things only true believers will find out by checking out this great comic book! This issue is one readers won’t want to miss as it’s both an indicator of the direction the series will take as a whole and how we can expect this arc to conclude.
