‘Drops of God’ season 2: Unresolved family issues and following a father’s legacy

Executive producer Klaus Zimmerman talks Drops of God season 2.

The wine centric drama Drops of God will soon return. It is a series inspired by the manga of the same name from creators Yuko and Shin Kibayashi and Shu Okimoto. In the new season protagonists Camille and Issei try to uncover the origins of the world’s greatest wine. Ahead of the season premiere, we spoke with executive producer Klaus Zimmerman about what viewers can expect.

The first season found Camille and Issei competing against each other in a series of wine related challenges for a sizable inheritance. Even though the pair ended up on good terms at the conclusion, there is still a noticeable tension between them in season two. They still need time to adjust to and become familiar with the other.

Zimmerman went on to describe their current relationship. “They have now understood who they are to each other, but they have not actually spent any time together. Very few times,” he explained. “Imagine suddenly you find you have a brother or sister and somebody tells you you are from the same blood. It doesn’t make you friends, right?”

But the new season of Drops of God doesn’t only explore the character dynamics together, but also who each are as individuals. When looking at their personal journeys, the creative team took different routes.

Zimmerman said, “We wanted to explore Issei’s family issues. We focused very much in season one on the competition. But a lot of his family issues, and it’s a really complicated family, are unresolved. So, we wanted to get to the bottom of this.”

He continued, “For Camille, we took the other option that actually she is fully restored. She has a perfect life and we put her into jeopardy by actually, first of all, helping her brother, but then getting to burn her wings and becoming a bit ambitious like her father was.”

Part of the allure of Drops of God is the globe trotting adventure visiting interesting and exotic locales. Season two is no different, and Zimmerman is anxious to share these different locations.

“What I’m curious is how people will respond to the new locations where we go,” he said. “Whether it’s Georgia or we go to this southern island in Japan, those are very special places and we go there for specific reasons because our story brings us there. But we also shoot at these locations. We shot there. It wasn’t easy so I hope that people will recognize something really special about these places visually and storywise…It’s a real road trip we’re doing. So that’s something I’m curious to see how people respond.”

Drops of God season two premieres Wednesday, January 21, on Apple TV+
