Klaus Janson retrospective at Philippe Labaune Gallery showcases five decades of comic book history

Klaus Janson is gearing up for his first U.S. Art Show, opening on March 5th.

This March, New York’s Philippe Labaune Gallery will present a career-spanning exhibition celebrating the work of Eisner and Harvey Award-winning artist Klaus Janson, one of the most influential figures in American comics. With more than five decades in the medium, Janson’s impact on visual storytelling remains profound.

The exhibition features over 100 original works, highlighting both solo pieces and landmark collaborations. Among the newly revealed art are a 1972 piece both penciled and inked by Janson, the cover of Superman #412 from 1985, and the iconic Daredevil: Bullseye vs. Elektra artwork from 1982, penciled by Frank Miller and inked by Janson. Also included are the cover to Convergence #1 and an interior page from issue #2 from 2015, penciled by Denys Cowan and inked by Janson, two pages from Sacred Creatures created entirely by Janson, and a striking Sin City pinup.

Together, the works trace Janson’s evolution from a rising talent in the early 1970s to a defining creative force behind some of the most important superhero comics of the late twentieth century and beyond.

“Through this survey, Klaus Janson emerges as a singular figure whose adaptability, sensitivity, and understanding have permanently expanded what comics can achieve,” said gallery founder Philippe Labaune. He emphasized Janson’s range across penciling, inking, coloring, writing, and teaching as central to the exhibition’s scope.

Janson’s philosophy reflects that breadth of experience. “Everything on a page is connected to everything else,” he said. “No decisions are arbitrary. Everything is conscious and deliberate.” His work demonstrates a deep commitment to clarity and emotional storytelling. “The reader should never have to decide what the story is. That’s the job of the storyteller.”

Inking was the discipline through which Janson first established his artistic identity, and it remains one of his defining strengths. Labaune notes that inking requires clarity, rhythm, depth, and dramatic control, qualities Janson consistently brings to both his own pencils and those of collaborators.

His long-running partnership with Frank Miller on Daredevil stands as one of the most influential collaborations in comics history. “Frank and I would often discuss and review what we were doing on our work together,” Janson recalled, describing a creative process rooted in trust and shared vision.

Beyond his professional achievements, Janson’s decades as an educator have shaped generations of artists. “I didn’t realize until I stood in front of a classroom how much I didn’t know,” he said. “There’s no doubt that teaching made me a better artist.”

Throughout his career, Janson has sought to embed emotional depth into every line and shadow. Influenced by impressionism and expressionism, he aims to communicate meaning beyond dialogue. “I try to reveal some information in a visual way that is not in the text,” he said. Stories centered on family, relationships, and personal choice continue to resonate most deeply with him.

The Philippe Labaune Gallery exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view that philosophy across decades of original art, showcasing an artist whose work has helped define the emotional and visual language of American comics.
