‘Ultimate Incursion’ review

A character-driven adventure with meaningful developments and strong artwork.

Ultimate Incursion is the first big crossover event for the new Ultimate Universe, and it uses Miles Morales as our guide through this reimagined world. Overall, it’s an entertaining, fast-moving story that feels more like a high-energy tour than a deep, universe-shaking epic. While it doesn’t always linger long enough on its biggest ideas, it delivers strong character moments and a few developments that could have major implications for Miles going forward.

Marvel

The story collects the five event issues and some material from the FCBD 2025 issue, and finds Miles’ baby sister, Billie, accidentally using a key left behind by the Maker to travel to Earth-6160, the rebuilt Ultimate Universe. Miles follows her, only to find himself in a world that isn’t exactly friendly to Spider-Men. Along the way, he clashes with the Spot, meets this universe’s Peter Parker and his son Richard, and crosses paths with members of the Ultimates, including Giant-Man, the Wasp, and a wary Black Panther. As the Maker’s larger plans loom in the background, Miles becomes entangled in a conflict involving stolen super-hero “catalysts” and a powered-up Emmanuel Da Costa. By the end, Billie is rescued, Miles regains crucial memories of his past life in the original Ultimate Universe and we learn some important information about Maker’s identity before returning home.

One of the book’s biggest strengths is its character work. Miles feels grounded and emotionally authentic, especially in moments involving Billie and when he confronts the weight of his lost universe. Camp and Ziglar put together some fun interactions with Peter and Richard and full of Spider-Man charm, even if some alliances form a bit too conveniently. The pacing, however, can be uneven. Major fights sometimes unfold quickly or partially off panel. Visually, Jonas Scharf’s art is dynamic and expressive, with big characters taking up the panels. Action scenes are energetic, the Spot has an eerie, elongated design that stands out, and quieter emotional beats are handled with subtle, effective detail.

In the end, Ultimate Incursion is a serviceable crossover that sets up some interesting possibilities for both Miles and the Ultimate Universe. It may not feel like a fully realized event with sky-high stakes, but it succeeds as a character-driven adventure with meaningful developments and strong artwork. For fans of Miles Morales or the new Ultimate line, it’s a worthwhile read that hints at bigger things still to come.

Strong emotional core, especially in Miles and Billie’s reunion.
The pacing feels rushed, particularly during the bigger fight scenes.
