Claremont returns to tell Gambit’s origin in ‘Gambit: Wanted’ #1

GAMBIT: WANTED, a five-issue retro limited series by co-creator Chris Claremont and artist Robert Gill, launches this July.

This July, Marvel revisits a key chapter in Remy LeBeau’s past with GAMBIT: WANTED, a new series that explores his path from New Orleans thief to X-Man.

Writer Chris Claremont returns to the era of his classic Uncanny X-Men run to spotlight one of his most intriguing co-creations. Joined by artist Robert Gill, the series focuses on Gambit’s final days before fully committing to the X-Men.

Set during the period when Gambit returned Storm to the remnants of the X-Men, the story digs into the moment that pushed him to join the team. As threats close in, including a hired assassin in Bullseye, Gambit is forced into a high-stakes confrontation that could change his life for good.

So what’s Gambit: Wanted about?

TARGET: REMY LEBEAU!

Get ready, mes amis, as Gambit, the mutant-thief-hero, travels back to his hometown for an explosive showdown! Set in the timeframe when Gambit returned Storm to what was left of the X-Men, discover how Gambit came to join the team for the first time – and the deadly trial that made it so! Someone’s got mutants in their crosshairs down in New Orleans… and when they hire Bullseye to target Gambit, hang on for the most kinetic showdown of the month!

The series continues Marvel’s line of retro stories that expand on Claremont’s long history with the franchise, following projects like Wolverine and Kitty Pryde, X-Treme X-Men, and a previous Gambit miniseries. Claremont describes the character’s appeal as rooted in contradiction, a man split between hero and thief, which makes this period of his life especially rich for storytelling.

“Getting the chance to work on a Gambit book with Chris was a complete surprise, and it continues to be a surreal experience,” Gill said. “Chris’s name is iconic and one that surrounded my early days of reading comics. I’ve always thought Gambit was one of the coolest and mysterious X-Men characters, and despite more than eight years drawing comics for Marvel, I’ve almost never drawn him… until now!”

The debut issue features a main cover by Leinil Francis Yu, along with Wanted poster-style variants by Phil Noto. GAMBIT: WANTED #1 arrives this July. Check out a preview and three covers below!
