Oni Press debuts ‘Pink Monsters,’ a powerful LGBTQ coming-of-age graphic novel

The graphic novel follows 14-year-old Frank as he begins to understand his sexuality while navigating a difficult home life.

Courtesy of Oni Press, AIPT can exclusively reveal a preview for Pink Monsters, the U.S. debut graphic novel from German cartoonist Claus Daniel Herrmann. Arriving May 26, 2026, ahead of Pride Month, the book tells a deeply personal coming-of-age story centered on identity, emotional manipulation, and self-acceptance.

The graphic novel follows 14-year-old Frank as he begins to understand his sexuality while navigating a difficult home life. Though shy, Frank has gained popularity at school thanks to his monster drawings, which the other kids eagerly collect. At home, however, things are far more complicated. His father is struggling with severe depression, leading Frank’s mother to seek help from an esoteric healer named Thea. While Thea initially offers comfort and certainty, her influence soon takes a darker turn as she begins blaming Frank’s artwork for his father’s illness and making him feel ashamed of being gay.

The preview highlights the emotional tension at the center of the story while showcasing Herrmann’s expressive art style and deeply human approach to difficult subject matter. The story explores how vulnerable people can be manipulated by figures claiming authority or secret knowledge, especially during adolescence and periods of emotional uncertainty.

“Access to one’s own feelings and the ability to think critically are key to self-determination—especially in a world where fellow human beings advocate for unverifiable beliefs and use them to recklessly tear down personal boundaries. I hope my readers, whether they are young adults themselves or already responsible for younger ones, will find an impressive example of this in my story,” said Herrmann.

Oni Press Managing Editor Christopher Cerasi also praised the book’s emotional honesty and relevance. “Claus Daniel Herrmann has crafted a touching and timely story about how people in positions of false authority who think they know better can use their influence to manipulate others and make them feel less than,” said Cerasi. “Pink Monsters navigates these heavy emotional themes through the lens of a young man who ultimately decides to stand up for himself and his identity and finds acceptance and friendship on the other side.”

Previously a finalist for the Berthold Leibinger Comic Book Prize, Pink Monsters has drawn comparisons to acclaimed graphic memoirs like Fun Home and Lighter Than My Shadow. The hardcover graphic novel hits shelves May 26, 2026, from Oni Press.
