Archie Comics’ 85th anniversary celebration kicks off this fall with a new ongoing series, a fresh take on Sabrina Spellman, and a horror-driven trip straight to Hell.
Oni Press and Archie Comics have revealed the first details of their ambitious new publishing partnership, announcing three new series launching this fall as part of a major relaunch celebrating Archie Andrews and the residents of Riverdale.
The initiative begins in September with Archie #1, a new ongoing series written by Ben H. Winters and illustrated by Fábio Moon. The publisher describes the series as a modern celebration of Archie Comics’ enduring appeal, arriving as part of the character’s 85th anniversary festivities.
The new series follows 17-year-old Archie Andrews as he navigates life in Riverdale, beginning with a local film festival that appears set to unravel a larger mystery. According to the publisher, Jughead Jones will play a key role in uncovering an enigmatic paradox that sits at the center of the story. Readers can also expect bonus stories, puzzles, pin-ups, and additional surprises throughout the series.
“One year ago, we started work on what has quickly become one of the most significant and anticipated collaborations in Oni’s 30-year history: our new and ambitious line of titles celebrating the greatness of Archie Comics,” said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson. “Now, we’re proud to welcome a vital new member to that team: the phenomenally talented Ben H. Winters, who is teaming with the brilliant Fábio Moon to deliver an eye-popping, heartstring-pulling ode to what makes these some of the most celebrated characters in the history of comics. From ARCHIE to SABRINA and ARCHIE IN HELL, our new comics are brimming with pop and power – from content to design, each issue is intended to be a highly concentrated dose of pure entertainment and unadulterated bliss, propelled by the never-ending energy of Archie’s 85-year legacy.”
Winters also shared his excitement about tackling one of comics’ most recognizable characters.
“What an extraordinary honor it is to write these stories,” said writer Ben H. Winters. “And more importantly, what a total blast. Archie Andrews is an honest-to-goodness American icon, right up there with Mickey Mouse and Bart Simpson…and just like them, he’s enterprising, curious, and kind, forever bouncing into some new adventure along with his loyal pals. I’m finding these characters delightful to write, for the same reason people have enjoyed reading Archie lo these many years — Riverdale’s just a fun place to hang out.”
The line expands in October with Sabrina the Teenage Witch #1 from Corinna Bechko and Kano. The series follows Sabrina Spellman as she attempts to balance high school life with her newly discovered magical heritage. Things become more complicated when Salem introduces a mythical trickster into her life, threatening to collide her ordinary and supernatural worlds.
Then, in November, Oni Press heads into darker territory with Archie in Hell #1 from Patrick Horvath and Tyler Crook. The horror series follows Archie Andrews after he becomes separated from his friends and trapped under a terrible curse. The project follows in the tradition of Archie horror titles while introducing an all-new supernatural saga spanning centuries.
The new publishing initiative arrives as Archie celebrates 85 years since his debut in Pep Comics #22. Beyond the new comics, the partnership will also include compact collections and deluxe graphic novels, while Archie continues to pursue film, publishing, and licensing projects, including the previously announced live-action feature film written by Tom King.
