Exclusive: Joan Boix’s ‘Tales of the Macabre’ brings classic horror comics to English readers

A long-overlooked master of horror comics finally reaches English-language audiences as SHP Comics launches a crowdfunding campaign for Tales of the Macabre.

Horror comics fans have a new campaign to keep an eye on. SHP Comics has launched crowdfunding for Tales of the Macabre, a collection of horror stories illustrated by acclaimed Spanish artist Joan Boix that has remained largely unknown to English-language readers for decades.

AIPT can exclusively reveal two pages from the collection, along with details on the campaign and its first digital release.

Steeped in the tradition of EC Comics’ legendary horror line from the 1950s, Tales of the Macabre gathers twenty stories adapted from some of literature’s greatest masters of horror and suspense. The collection includes tales inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Bloch, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Franz Kafka, and others.

The project marks the first time these stories have been translated and adapted for English-speaking audiences. Each page is being presented in full color under Boix’s supervision, preserving the atmosphere and detail that made the original stories stand out.

While Boix may not be a household name in North America, his work has earned acclaim throughout Europe thanks to his expressive storytelling and ability to bring psychological horror to life. Readers familiar with classic EC titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Haunt of Fear, and Vault of Horror will likely find plenty to appreciate in these pages.

As part of the campaign, backers receive immediate access to a digital comic featuring Girl From Mars, an adaptation of a Robert Bloch story that serves as an introduction to Boix’s distinctive approach to horror.

The final collection will span approximately 160 pages and feature adaptations of stories, including:

  • The Hound by H.P. Lovecraft
  • The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar by Edgar Allan Poe
  • Girl From Mars by Robert Bloch
  • The Case of Lady Sannox by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  • Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

The campaign offers multiple reward tiers, including digital editions, trade paperbacks, hardcovers, and collector-focused bundles. Early bird pricing is currently available for several reward levels.

According to SHP Comics, the campaign will help fund the adaptation, lettering, and coloring process required to create what they hope will become the definitive English-language edition of Boix’s work.

For horror readers, the appeal is clear. Tales of the Macabre combines literary source material, classic horror comics storytelling, and artwork from a creator whose work has remained hidden from many English-speaking fans. The result is a project that feels both like a rediscovered artifact and a brand-new release.
