Marvel sends the X-Men back to the ’80s with new Alexander Lozano variant covers

Six ‘80s X-Men Variant Covers by acclaimed artist Alexander Lozano will be featured on X-titles starting in July.

Marvel Comics is turning back the clock this summer with a new line of ’80s Variant Covers by acclaimed artist Alexander Lozano, celebrating mutantkind’s most iconic decade with plenty of neon, attitude, and retro fashion.

Set to appear across X-Men titles throughout July and August, the cover series reimagines some of Marvel’s most beloved mutants through the lens of 1980s pop culture. Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Rogue, Magik, and Mystique are all given bold new looks inspired by the era of arcades, synth music, denim jackets, and larger-than-life style.

The covers arrive alongside Marvel’s renewed focus on one of the franchise’s defining periods. This week saw the launch of X-Men: Outback by Steve Orlando and Stephen Segovia, a new series revisiting the legendary era when the X-Men operated out of the Australian Outback following one of the team’s most transformative chapters.

For Lozano, the project carries a personal connection.

“I discovered my love for the X-Men back in the 1980s,” Lozano shared. “For me, there’s hardly anything that captures the unique sound and atmosphere of growing up in the ’80s better than the X-Men in their stylish costumes. They were the unsung heroes who had to face impossible odds.”

Lozano also drew inspiration from the decade’s fashion and youth culture, imagining what might happen if the X-Men were forced to navigate one of the era’s greatest challenges.

“But while the X-Men were busy fighting Magneto, Dark Phoenix and the Hellfire Club, a young generation was trying to find its own identity, somewhere between Miami Vice and punk,” Lozano said. “So I thought it only fair to put my beloved X-Men through their greatest test of all: the Uncanny ’80s fashion!!!”

The six-cover series highlights fan-favorite mutants in eye-catching new outfits while embracing the colorful energy that defined both the decade and many of the X-Men’s most memorable stories. The nostalgic artwork is expected to run on select issues of X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men United, and Wolverine.

Marvel has revealed the first four covers, with the remaining two set to follow as the promotion continues throughout the summer.
