Judging by the Cover – 10/24/18 new releases

Dave and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comic book releases.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media & Content Manager Dave Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Dave’s Picks:

Barbarella #11
Cover art by Eric Powell

Judging by the Cover - 10/24/18 new releases

A character who wears her sexuality on her sleeve, this cover does the new costume justice with a powerful pose. I really dig what Powell has done with Barbarella’s hair bleeding into the cosmos as well as the funky space disc thing she’s flying on. You get some space adventure vibes while never losing her prowess.

Spider-Girls #1
Cover art by Jeff Dekal

Judging by the Cover - 10/24/18 new releases

I had a hard time choosing between Dekal’s variant cover and Yasmine Putri’s main cover so I’m including them both! Starting with Dekal’s above, I really love the three poses these Spider-Women are in and you get a good look at their very different costumes from one another. It’s the heavenly city that really makes things pop with its glow, and check out the webs which are white with detail only on the edges, conveying the sticky webby-ness.

Spider-Girls #1
Cover art by Yasmine Putri

Check out that dodecahedron shape popping up all over the right and left costumes. The shapes give the costumes an interesting look, as if they’re reflective. I can’t stop looking at them. The poses are also quite strong, drawing your eye from top right to bottom left. You get a sense of the fun on the bottom character, the seriousness of the middle and the free nature on the right Spider-Girl releases her web.

Eric’s Picks:

X-Men Red #9
Cover art by Jenny Frison

Judging by the Cover - 10/24/18 new releases

I love Frison’s rendering of Nightcrawler’s teleportation cloud here. The way the smoke contorts and wisps around his body is great, as are the lovely shades of purple. I also like Kurt’s expression; he looks amusingly unbothered by whatever’s happening in front of him.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #36
Cover art by Natacha Bustos

Judging by the Cover - 10/24/18 new releases

This is fun! Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a sweet series, and this cover conveys that very well. The comedy of a kid’s lemonade stand juxtaposed with a giant T-Rex is cute, as is the detail of Devil’s toothpaste dripping out and down on the biker. This whole thing is just neat, to include the mixture of the drawing with the photograph of a real building.

Cold Spots #3
Cover art by Shiuan Chan

Judging by the Cover - 10/24/18 new releases

This cover is atmospheric, lovely, and somehow simultaneously soft and imposing. The flowy nature of the (presumed) ghost’s hair is otherworldly, and the human woman’s expression is great. The orange moth is a small but awesome detail, and it stands out well against the rest of the image’s blues and whites.
