Hulk solves his Bruce Banner problem, and vice versa, in ‘Immortal Hulk: The Best Defense’ #1

Hulk is going to have a lot more control after this issue.

SPOILERS ahead. You’ve been warned.

Writer Al Ewing has done such a great job with The Immortal Hulk I figure we should give him the keys to the green goliath and call it a decade. He continues that trend in Immortal Hulk: The Best Defense #1 by progressing the plot and making a big change for the character. That’s good, seeing as he’ll soon be on a newfangled Defenders team.

Early on in the issue readers learn the Eye of Agamotto has lost its owner (the Sorcerer Supreme if you’re paying attention). Bruce Banner aims to find the thief.

It’s daytime, so the Hulk can’t come out and play, making this Bruce’s responsibility. If you read the issue, you learn the bastard who took it has been using the Eye to manipulate others. In a fight, Bruce manages to wrench it from his hands only to turn it on right away.

Bruce gets a look at his true self within him and I think you know what he sees.

It’s a clever moment as Al Ewing and artist Simone Di Meo show the duplicity of Hulk. Inside Bruce is the raging monster, and inside Hulk is Bruce. It’s a combo that can now change on a whim. Hulk no longer has to come at just at night, and Bruce can turn on the monster whenever he needs to by simply looking into the Eye of Agamotto. This is certainly going to help Hulk fight at the drop of a hat when he joins up with his new team in Defenders: The Best Defense #1 out in two weeks.

This is only part of the story in  Immortal Hulk: The Best Defense and I recommend reading the entire issue. You can pick it up digitally or at your local comic shop today.
