Could Batman kill a hero for the greater good? We find out in Justice League #25

Batman is very capable of letting a team member die, it seems.

Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned. For more read our review.

Scott Snyder and Jorge Jimenez’s epic “The Sixth Dimension” story arc comes to a close this week and it’s a doozy. Seriously, pick it up because it hits you in the feels. The ending is satisfying in part because much of it builds towards Superman practically dying, at the hands of Batman no less. Well, sort of.

As the issue plays out, we learn Batman has one of two choices: let Superman die and his powers flow into Forger, or disobey Forger and let the Justice League die. Batman, of course, has another plan entirely, but for much of this and the last few issues, it seemed as if Batman was ready to let Superman die. And in this issue, we learn he was!

Batman was making a gamble and in fact, knew Superman could die. Harsh, man. On top of that, Batman was aware Forger’s plan was a viable option, which explains why he’d let Superman die at all. Apparently saying “we’d have a better chance if [he died]” doesn’t bother Superman, since it all turned out okay. He’s all smiles when Batman says:

He left Superman the option to save himself because they’re friends, I guess. But seriously, Clark, he was going to let you die! I guess one could argue Batman knew Superman would live, but there was still a chance.

Plus, you gotta be loyal to the team.

Ah, but is Forger right? This is only a slice of the story and I highly recommend you pick up the issue, which sets up “Year of the Villain.”
