‘Get Out’ creator Jordan Peele wants to make a live-action ‘Gargoyles’ movie

Could a live-action Gargoyles be the next Transformers?

“One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled…”

If you’re browsing this website and were alive in the ’90s, chances are the preceding phrase is very familiar to you. They’re the opening words to the Gargoyles introduction, a well-written, vividly-styled Disney animated series with dark overtones which ran from 1994-97; and soon enough, they could be the first words you hear for a live-action Gargoyles offering. Oscar-award winning writer/director Jordan Peele (Get Out) is interested in bringing Goliath, Demona, Elisa Maza and the rest of the Gargoyles gang to silver screen ala Paramount’s Bay-helmed Transformers series. There’s only one problem: Disney sees the property as too much of a risk.

According to /Film:

… Entertainment industry newsletter The Ankler writer Richard Rushfield reports that Peele ‘walk[ed] in and says he wants to do a new version of Gargoyles.’ But instead of green lighting it or turning it down outright, Disney is apparently sitting on its hands.

Rushfield suggests that because Peele’s take on Gargoyles doesn’t fit neatly within Disney’s branded silos (live-action fairy tale, Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel), the studio sees it as too much of a risk. He characterizes the company’s lack of decisiveness as being based on the paralyzing fear of not wanting to turn down a project that may turn out to be a great idea. Instead of turn it down, he says, they’ll just play a waiting game with Peele and patiently sit there until he moves on to something else.

Could Gargoyles, under Peele’s writing/direction be another blockbuster live-action Transformers? Or is Disney right to hesitate? Sound off in the comments. One thing’s for certain: Goliath has to be voiced by Keith David. He is what Peter Cullen is to Optimus Prime.
