Is It Good? Uncanny X-Men #9 Review

As writer Brian Michael Bendis continues to create what was described by editor Nick Lowe as a “giant Bendis tapestry” he brings a new character into the fray. An unexpected reunion can serve as a great plot device: a moment where someone says something along the lines of “Oh no, it’s you” usually translates to storytelling gold. The story of this issue revolves around one such moment. It’s a reunion, but is it good?

So, a little recap to start this off. Fabio (No, not the “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” guy), a new X-Man, went home to a family that was very upset that he was a mutant and X-Man. Dazzler, a former X-Man showed up at Fabio’s doorstep, announcing that she was now working for S.H.I.E.L.D. Cue this issue…

You could already tell this issue was gonna be great. A panicking family who just underwent a total shock comes face to face with a deadly, wisecracking, sarcastic mutant. Sparks do fly and quips are quipped. It’s all quite entertaining and funny. Lines like this are what makes Bendis’s writing some of the most believable in the industry.

I think that’s what makes this issue appeal to me so much. All these lines that are so human and well-written. The story is a fun ride, excellently paced with the right amount of dialogue and action. One of the best scenes is a short glimpse into a training session at the New Xavier School. In this glimpse we meet a new mutant recruit and saw how he interacts with the rest of the students. He seems to click especially well with a female mutant. If I had to guess I would say that Bendis was hinting to a romance down the road.

Oh, you’re so modest!

  • Unique, beautiful art.
  • Fast moving, intriguing story.
  • Awesome character interactions.
  • Fabio who joins the team is not Fabio Lanzoni.

The art is also great. Chris Bachalo handles all of the action sequences while maintaining a nice level of detail on faces. I absolutely love the inks and coloring on this issue. The backgrounds are gorgeous and give the comic a truly different feel.

Is it Good?

Hell yeah. A fun, well told story that adds a lot to the overall narrative.
