After finding breakout success as MJ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s hugely successful Spider-Man: Homecoming, Zendaya is poised to hit it big again in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune reboot. A report out of Collider reveals that Zendaya is being considered for the role of Chani, Timothée Chalamet’s love interest.
Based on the novel by Frank Herbert, Dune is “set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which noble houses, in control of individual planets,” and “tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose noble family accepts the stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis. As this planet is the only source of the oracular spice melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe, control of Arrakis is a coveted–and dangerous–undertaking. The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice.”
Assuming Zendaya comes onboard, she will be the third actor from the MCU family to join the project. With Thor‘s Stellan Skarsgard (Erik Selvig) and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista (Drax) already being cast as two of the film’s primary antagonists — the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and Glossu “The Beast” Rabban respectively.
Yesterday it was revealed that Star Wars star Oscar Issac is in talks to play the role of Duke Leto Atreides, father to Timothée Chalamet’s character. Other confirmed castings are Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, and Rebecca Ferguson as The Lady Jessica.
Pre-production for the project is in full swing and with most of the major castings completed, we should expect filming to begin this year. At this time, no estimated release date is available.
