Fantastic Fest 2019 is less than a month away and for the first time every AiPT! will be there to cover it live! This year makes the fifteenth anniversary of the genre festival. Movies to have made their world premiere at the event have included There Will Be Blood, Zombieland, and Darling. The film festival has also drawn its share of celebrities with Dolph Lundgren, Lucky McKee, and Michael Shannon all having attended. This year’s slate of movies is as impressive as any other year. Here are the movies we are most looking forward to at Fantastic Fest 2019.
Jojo Rabbit
Taika Waititi has won over fans with a list of films that range from Hunt for the Wilderpeople to Thor: Ragnarok. Jojo Rabbit will be making its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest. The movie is set in World War II Germany and is about a young boy named Jojo who is picked on by the other boys. Jojo seeks solace from his imaginary friend – Adolph Hitler.
Knives Out
From opening night we movie to closing night. Rian Johnson’s follow up to the hotly debated The Last Jedi looks to be an old school whodunit with a modern twist. Johnson has an impressive pedigree and few things are more fun than an old fashioned murder mystery. But will audiences be able to look past his work with Star Wars?
Parasite
Bong Joon-ho has done a great job in the director’s seat. His movies The Host and Snowpiercer are two of the highest grossing movies in South Korean history. This year, Parasite won the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Korean movie to do so. Can Parasite repeat the stateside success of Bong’s previous movies?
Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is a regular on queer horror movie lists. When it was first released in 1985 the movie did not receive the same adulation it does now, however. On the contrary, many people thought there was something wrong with the movie. Scream, Queen! is a documentary that takes a look at Nightmare 2 and its place in queer cinema and film history in general.
Iron Fists and Kung Fu Kicks
Kung fu movies have a long and illustrious history. Who has not thrilled to an awesome fight scene from a Shaw Brothers movie or a battle involving Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee? This documentary is a look at one of the most entertaining film genres of all time.
Memory: The Origins of Alien
Alien is one of the most iconic movies of all time. It as spawned a multimedia franchise and one of the most memorable tag lines in movie history. The documentary details the inspiration behind some of the film’s most memorable moments. It also looks at how the screenplay came about through interviews.
