‘Star Trek: Picard’ renewed for Season 2 ahead of series debut

A second season? Make it so.

CBS has renewed Patrick Stewart’s upcoming Star Trek: Picard series for a second season ahead of its January 2020 premiere on the new CBS All Access streaming service.

The story is set at the end of the 24th century, 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis in which the planet Romulus was destroyed and Picard’s long-time friend and fellow Starship Enterprise crew-member Data was killed. Picard is struggling with retirement until a mysterious woman with possible ties to the Borg approaches him needing help.

The state of California’s Film Commission program has awarded Picard the largest ever tax credit for a small screen project, with a staggering $20.45 million. This is a significant jump from the $15.6 million that the series was awarded for its first season in November of 2019.

CBS has announced that series showrunner Michael Chabon will stay on for Season 2 alongside Picard creator Alex Kurtzman.

Leading the cast is Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, with Isa Briones as Dahj, Alison Pill as Agnes Jurati, Santiago Cabrera as Cristobal “Chris” Rios, Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, Harry Treadaway as Narek, Evan Evagora as Elnor, Brent Spiner as Data, Jeri Ryan or Seven of Nine, Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh, Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, and Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi.

As with the first season, Season 2 will reportedly be a ten-episode run. Star Trek: Picard premieres January 23, 2020.
