Some of you may not know Claudia Kishi’s name, to which I ask, do you even read, bro? All kidding aside, Claudia Kishi is a character in the popular book series The Baby-Sitters Club by Anne M. Martin. This series was particularly popular in the 80’s and 90’s and is still around today. Claudia Kishi always stood out as a character because she was just cool. She was an artist, dressed in her own unique fashion, and she had her own phone line. Creators such as Gale Galligan, Naia Cucukov, and CB Lee ( to name a few) illustrate how Claudia has been inspirational in their childhood as well as in their careers. The Claudia Kishi Club is an ode to a beloved Japanese-American character who provided much needed representation to the fabric of American pop culture.
Various Asian American writers and artists gather together in the short film The Claudia Kishi Club to discuss the importance of Claudia Kishi to them on personal levels. Directed and produced by Sue Ding, this interesting film explains how Claudia is not a stereotypical character. She is a bad speller who hoards junk food, and has a number of insecurities despite her cool girl exterior. She is a character who is not afraid to be herself and embraces her individuality. As stated in the documentary, when kids are playing games and choosing characters, everyone wants to be Claudia Kishi.
