‘This Isn’t Me’ Review: A heartfelt and dirty story

Clever writing, awkward situations, and a comedic performance make This Isn’t Me a hilarious story about identity.

There is the person the world sees and the person that no one sees. In This Isn’t Me (the short was scheduled to play at SXSW before it was cancelled), Fred is a guy who is just trying to get it together. After sleeping in, Fred needs to get to a much needed interview, then go to a much needed job, all while downing gallons of water so that he can make it to a hookup that requires a lot of hydration. This total mess of a day makes sense in the life of Fred. Clever writing, awkward situations, and a comedic performance make This Isn’t Me a hilarious story about identity.

Fred’s new employer asks him if he’s a when and where person and he says it’s more about the who and the how. This seemingly nonsensical piece of dialogue is funny in the context of a job interview, but takes on a deeper meaning as Fred must investigate through his priorities. He can engage in a strange date with a man who has unconventional proclivities or he can help his young student deal with his own personal issues.

Directed by Adrian Rojas Elliot, this comedy will have viewers anxious as Fred continues running errands throughout his day in a frantic hurry. This Isn’t Me is a funny episodic short with a lot of sincerity and heart.
