Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s Suicide Squad has been a cinematic experience. Excellent pacing, tons of action, and layouts that skip a step to bring you in-your-face storytelling. It has been just over two months since issue #4 and we’re damn ready for a Boomerang battle for the ages. Can the squad bring him in? And if they do, how many will they lose in the team? Check out the preview for a taste of the issue.
This issue picks up where we left off as the team attempts to stop Boomerang on his home turf. Taylor and Redondo are doing a great job showing how this team gels and works together. They’ve been more or less thrown together against their will, but we’re starting to see maybe this team can hold up over time. That said, given how many of the members have been killed, anyone can be taken out at any given time. Case in point: the latest loss in this issue. That loss is earned, though, and is a nicely transitioning death to remind us this team isn’t playing games.
This series continues to harbor lots of surprises, not least of which is how the confrontation between the Suicide Squad and Lok turns out. I recommend reading this because it’s so good at breaking your expectations in the best of ways. There are also two excellent action scenes masterfully laid out by Redondo. The book is capable of defying expectations, but also delivering fun action and stakes. That’s about as good as superhero comics can get.

Colors by Adriano Lucas impress with lots of fire, energy powers, and gnarly burns just to name a few stand out elements. The last page has a glow effect from the sun that helps convey the heroic nature of the team and it’s things like this that you don’t immediately notice that up the quality of the overall book.
One negative is how quick of a read this issue is. Consisting mostly of two action scenes and the fallout from both, it goes by fast with very little time for the character. Characters do get to make hard choices that further them along, but it’s in the moment and leaves little to explore and think on. Reserve that between the gutters I suppose.
A good, fast-paced action issue with surprises and a major turn in the plot that’ll have folks wishing for issue #6 right away. It’s impressive this team consists of mostly unknown characters and yet we’re already caring about their well being more than we might have with the usual Suicide Squad lineup.
