Dark Horse launches new oversized Marvel Black & White line with Barry Windsor-Smith’s landmark Weapon X

One of Wolverine’s most influential stories is returning in a new format designed to spotlight every detail of Barry Windsor-Smith’s acclaimed artwork.

Dark Horse Books has announced a new line of archival Marvel collections that will present classic stories in oversized black-and-white editions. The initiative begins with Marvel Black & White: Barry Windsor-Smith’s Weapon X, arriving as a deluxe celebration of one of the most important Wolverine stories ever published.

The collection reprints Windsor-Smith’s groundbreaking Weapon X saga, originally serialized in Marvel Comics Presents #72-84. Presented without color, the new edition puts the focus squarely on Windsor-Smith’s intricate linework, allowing readers to experience the story from a fresh perspective.

Widely regarded as a defining chapter in Wolverine’s history, Weapon X explored the horrific experiments that transformed Logan into the living weapon fans know today. The story remains one of the character’s most celebrated origin tales, blending psychological horror, action, and tragedy.

In addition to the complete Weapon X storyline, the volume will include Windsor-Smith’s work from The Uncanny X-Men #205 and #214, along with archival materials that provide additional insight into the creator’s process and legacy.

The collection also features a new essay by comics historians Chris Ryall and John Lind, plus scans of original artwork that showcase Windsor-Smith’s pages in remarkable detail. Ryall and Lind have been busy at Dark Horse of late, with a Most Villainous, Vampire Tales, and more Marvel collections on the way via Dark Horse.

Dark Horse describes the new Marvel Black & White line as an opportunity for longtime fans, collectors, and newcomers to revisit iconic Marvel stories while appreciating the craftsmanship behind the artwork in a format rarely seen in modern reprints.

For readers interested in comic art history, Marvel Black & White: Barry Windsor-Smith’s Weapon X offers a closer look at a story that helped define Wolverine and cemented Windsor-Smith’s place among the medium’s most influential creators.
