‘Revenge of the Cosmic Ghost Rider’ #5 review

Can Cosmic Ghost Rider survive Hell?

It’s curtains for Revenge of the Cosmic Ghost Rider which ends today in the digital format. Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum and Scott Hepburn are closing out Frank Castle’s journey as he attempts to save Cammi’s soul. She’s dead now, though (oops!), and it’s time to make a deal with Mephisto. Yeah, that won’t end well.

This is an interesting exploration of the Cosmic Ghost Rider character as it delves into his desire to save a friend — but at what cost? Frank is a bit selfish in this issue and it’s an interesting reminder he’s human even if he’s a bit crazy and super old. I’m not sure it entirely works — it certainly ends abruptly, but the attempt is a valiant one.

The book is also cool as we get to see Frank in Hell. Hepburn does a good job supplying environments and creatures of Hell for Frank to walk by as he reflects on his actions and what to do next. Antonio Fabela’s colors are bright and vibrant, reminding us this is a cosmic universe filled with positive energy even in Hell. Mephisto is a fun character here thanks to the depiction and facial expressions really making him emote. This book might make some want a Mephisto lead book. Also, give Hepburn a Brood book — he’d do wonders with it!

The ending is quite bittersweet. Frank is trying to do the right thing, but for a selfish reason. I can’t say it’s the most satisfying ending, even if it shows Frank still has a heart and a desire to fight injustice. I have to wonder if the book ended early since it ends so abruptly and leaves you wanting. It does plant the seeds for a sequel, but there isn’t enough time to understand the implications or even how we get to saving Cammi in a future title.

I liked this issue, but didn’t love it. The book reads like it was canceled a little late, forcing things to wrap up much too quickly here. More time spent developing where this might go from here could have made the final pages matter much more too. As it stands though, this was a good looking title well worth a read if you need a little more Cosmic Ghost Rider in your life.

Great art that's bright and imaginative
I kinda want to see Hallum write a Mephisto book now!
Clunky ending that seems rushed and off
