‘Lycanimator’ and the charm of low budget horror

A worse movie would have been better.

Lycanimator does not waste any time letting its audience know what it’s about. After an early psychedelic mad scientist/werewolf scene, the plot kicks in. Five friends plan to spend a weekend at a secluded house they have rented. The two couples going are having their issues, but some time away may be all they need to fix their relationships. One mysterious green serum later, their plans are ruined.

Wild Eye Releasing is a small distribution company that releases low budget horror movies. One of their recent movies was the awesomely bad horror WrestleMassacre. Lycanimator is in the same vein. Those expecting a serious horror movie will be disappointed. Lycanimator is supposed to be low budget horror fun all the way. The random nudity, poor acting, and bad editing are all there.

So it is somewhat surprising how tame Lycanimator is. There is a mild death scene and a cheap stabbing here and there, but little else. The story almost seems to want to be more about the tension. But then the person in the cheap neon werewolf suit shows up. There is a scene reminiscent of hentai that also shows Lycanimator’s lack of subtlety. This is a film that only cares about visceral scares.

'Lycanimator' and the charm of low budget horror

The release proves the importance of charm in a cheap horror movie. It seems to have all the ingredients to be a cult classic. So why isn’t it? There are no characters to get behind to begin with. The story also lacks the silliness needed in these types of movies. It ends up being a poorly short horror movie. And who wants to rewatch that?

Lycanimator never wanted to be a serious scary movie. And there is nothing wrong with that. Low budget horror movies are some of the most fun ones to be found.  Unfortunately, It seems like it did not want to be too goofy either. This results in a movie that never quite delivers in any way. Never very good or bad, it ends up being unmemorable.
