SDCC ’20: A Look Inside ‘Marvel’s 616’ on Disney+

Marvel’s 616 is a new docuseries set to stream on Disney+.

Marvel’s “A Look Inside “Marvel’s 616” on Disney+” panel took place today which revealed new details about the upcoming docuseries Marvel’s 616. Just yesterday, Disney+ released two clips from the upcoming original anthology docuseries that will focus on lost characters, representation in comics, and more. The panel was hosted by Angélique Roché and featured directors Gillian Jacobs, Paul Scheer, and executive producers Sarah Amos and Jason Sterman.

You can watch the panel in full below.

Sterman explained the show’s format allowed each episode to be its own film and “its own journey through the Marvel universe.” That means theme, tone, and genre is different across the episodes. Amos said the show is made for hardcore fans–like the ones watching Comic-Con@Home–but also accessible to casual fans too. The show is likely to spur emotions from the audience as well as reveal things to fans even the shows producers didn’t know about.

Jacobs–who directed “Higher, Further, Faster” shining a light on the women of Marvel Comics–said she went back to the 20s and 30s to understand how history affected Marvel Comics. “I was watching clips of congressional hearings,” Jacobs said. She explained she was excited to find out about things and also meet creators involved in the comics. Later, she said one of her favorite moments was filming in the Marvel offices as well as bringing women together who worked together in previous decades.

Scheer talked, comically so, about wanting to cover Hellcow a lot more. He also discussed the episode “Lost and Found,” he directed which follows his journey to discover the “forgotten” characters of Marvel Comics. “I never enjoyed Thor until Jason Aaron wrote Thor,” Scheer said, explaining there are many different versions of characters in history that might speak to audiences, further showing how expansive the universe is and how much you can talk about.

Marvel’s 616 will feature 8 episodes and will be streaming “soon.”

The panel was one of three Disney+ will be hosting during Comic-Con@Home with two more on the way this Saturday.
