‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves reveals a deep comic book connection to the film

To get an inside look at The Batman you might want to pick up Darwyn Cooke’s Batman: Ego and Other Tails.

DC FanDome kicked off today with plenty of details about big DC Comics movies like Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad as well as The Batman to end the day. The panel was an interesting one filled with details–like how the film takes place about 2 years into Batman being a hero–with many coming from fan questions. One question asked about a deep cut element entwined into the film and it is a deep comic book connection.

Reeves revealed the deep cut is from Darwyn Cooke’s Batman: Ego and Other Tails. Reeves said, “Because I wanted to get into the mindset of the character and I wanted to think of the psychology — for me, I think one of the cool deep dive ones was Darwyn Cooke’s Ego,” and that’s about “confronting the beast that is Batman. There’s a kind of duality. There’s a lot in what I was trying to do in the story about him confronting the shadow side of himself. The degree to which you have self-knowledge, you’re able to understand your motivations, but he’s broken, Batman. So while he’s doing all of these things for the reasons that he thinks is right and that has a heroic sort of grounding in them, there’s also many things that are driven by the parts of himself, he doesn’t yet know. So I would say that that psychological union shadow side, that sort of version of it, is very much connected to that vision from Darwin Cooke, from Ego.”

You can pick up the book on Amazon today, I know I will to get a head start on the upcoming film.
