What could the ‘Wolverine’ #5 end-credits cliffhanger mean?

From Asgard to Fortnite what could this cliffhanger really mean?

Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned. For more on Wolverine #5 read our review.

Wolverine has been an interesting series in part because it has juggled more than one story in its first five issues. In Wolverine #5, which is out today, writer Benjamin Percy and artist Viktor Bogdanovic continue their story with vampires. Not just any vampires, but Dracula has in fact stolen Wolverine’s blood. The comic is an action-heavy romp across cold climate and involves a team-up between Wolverine and some vamp kids.

But the real spoilers begin on the last page. After the dust settles and Wolverine gets some revenge, Logan is surprised by blinding rainbow light.

Okay so who’s talking to Wolverine and what does this mean? And what of the rainbow? One might assume it’s Asgard come calling, but given they haven’t been involved with the mutants or Wolverine that seems unlikely.

Could it be the Fortnite tie-in?

Given the trailer shows characters being whisked off by a rainbow, it’s plausible. Even Wolverine is taken in the trailer:

This scene is also added on after the credits as if it was not part of the main narrative. It’s possible this was added later in production when the Fortnite deal was made. Marvel has also shown the partnership is important by putting some of their best artists on Fortnite/Marvel mashup covers over the next two months.

We also know the story in Fortnite is canon, especially since it utilizes the recent Donny Cates and Nic Klein version of Galactus and Thor. The text on the page in Wolverine #5 also seems to suggest Logan is being called for a special mission.

Benjamin Percy remarked this morning this final page will make Wolverine #5 a “collector’s item” since it won’t be reprinted in the trade.

The fact is, we may not find out for some time what this rainbow is all about since Wolverine #6 is solicited as an X of Swords book:

X OF SWORDS, CHAPTER 3
Descent. Penance. A legendary power reclaimed.

and likely that event will take over for some time. Maybe there’s some missing detail in the earlier parts of the book though and I recommend picking up the issue to see for yourself.
