31 Days of Halloween

What we are looking forward to most at the Nightstream Film Festival

All virtual genre fest for October!

The Nightstream Film Festival is one of the most interesting ideas of the year. Born out of necessity, the virtual event sees five genre fests (Boston Underground Film Festival, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, North Bend Film Fest, The Overlook Film Festival, and Popcorn Frights Film Festival) come together to form one big genre film festival. Think Toto, but with less guitars and more blood.

When this many fests come together, there is going to be a very impressive lineup. Nightstream is scheduled to have over 30 feature films, almost 200 shorts, plus around 20 panels and events. AIPT will be there to cover the event. Here is what we are most looking forward to seeing.

Anything for Jackson

Exorcism movies have been a staple of horror for decades. What is seen less are reverse exorcism stories. Anything for Jackson tries to fill that void by telling a story about an elderly couple’s yearning to bring back their recently deceased grandson. Their plan requires a pregnant woman and a dark ritual. Sounds easy enough.

Time of Moulting

Taking place over ten years, Time of Moulting is about a young girl who is raised by her domineering mother and indifferent father. This psychological drama focuses on how upbringing can impact someone’s personality.

Mandibles

What good is a genre festival if it does not have at least one horror comedy? Mandibles sounds like a modern day King Kong movie – sorta. Two friends find a giant fly stuck in the trunk of a car. Their solution? Train it so they can make money.

Frank and Zed

Whenever someone does an adult movie with puppets, it goes one of two ways. It is either so over the top it loses it audience or it knows how to reign itself in and ends up being a fun movie. Done entirely with hand puppets, Frank and Zed is about two monsters who are living a peaceful life until some villagers show up.

My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To

More than just an eye catching title, the movie is about sibling love. Dwight and Jessie are doing everything they can to help their younger brother Thomas who is suffering from an illness. The one thing that seems to be keeping him alive is giving him fresh blood. The brother and sister decide they have to go to extreme lengths to buy Thomas more time.

The Obituary of Tunde Johnson

What we are looking forward to most at the Nightstream Film Festival

An incredibly topical use of the time loop formula. Tunde Johnson is a gay black teenager who has to relive the events of May 28 over and over again. Even though he tries to do things differently, the end is always the same. The day ends with him unarmed and shot by the police.

Nightstream will be held from October 8-11. Badges are now available. The full lineup for Nightstream can be found here
