Is It Good? Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #11 Review

In last month’s issue, there was a whole lot of monster fighting, a whole lot of great art, and one gigantic mess of a plot. Will there be even more kaiju fisticuffs in this issue? Will the plot relate to any of it? Will it matter? Is it good?

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #11 (IDW Publishing)

The story starts off with about as much awesome can possibly be crammed into a few pages. After the military sets of some underground charges, Baragon blasts through the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

“DO YOU THINK THIS HORN ON MY HEAD STANDS FOR FRANCE?”

Unfortunately for him, he’s promptly greeted with a brutal ass kicking courtesy of Mecha Godzilla. Not only is the fight gorgeously drawn and choreographed, but we’re actually given a clear and believable reason for it occurring (!).

‘WHAM’, indeed!

Later, the random alien from last issue explains how and why his race is attempting to take over/destroy earth. Meanwhile, we get to see the same aliens amassing while they discuss their brilliant plan to let the monsters soften us up a bit before they kill everyone… which seems terribly inefficient, but whatever. Let’s get back to some more kaiju action.

…or watch the big guy take a nap/dump in the ocean.

Godzilla is attacked by a group of monsters who he’s already beaten up. This time, however, they gang up on him well enough to do some real damage. Fortunately, Big G gets an assist from the humans. Unfortunately, that royally pisses of Destroyah, who sends his minions after the military while Godzilla continues to fight like hell.

Is It Good?

Let’s get this out of the way first: The whole “underwater race who is mad about humans polluting the ocean” plot has officially gone off the rails. It’s derivative and uninteresting.

But the monster fights in this one… holy crap… Matt Frank is the man.

Do you hear that? It’s your inner child screaming with unbridled joy

And as much as I’m knocking the plot, Chris Mowry deserves a lot of credit for choreographing the action sequences so well AND giving us perhaps the coolest opening chapter of the series.
Once again, enjoying this book comes down to whether or not the kaiju kick-assery makes reading through the boring side plot stuff worth it. In this issue’s case, the answer is a resounding yes.
