As we approach Reign of X, the X-Men series has been a guiding star for the series with impressive one-shot stories that introduce new ideas. The Vault, for instance, shakes things up and will be explored in 2021. In X-Men #16, out today, Jonathan Hickman and Phil Noto reveal new details about the future of new plot threads like Arakko’s new role on Earth and more importantly new details about how the X-Men team will function.
Recently Jonathan Hickman said in the AIPT exclusive X-Men Monday that there will actually be a superhero team called the X-Men in Reign of X. He said:
Jonathan: Hands down, my favorite shenanigans from House of X and Powers of X until now is that for over 100 issues of X-Men comics, I got away with there not being an actual superhero team called the X-Men.
Near the end of the latest issue–I highly recommend you read the book in its entirety for all the little tidbits–Jean Grey and Cyclops are asked to join the Quiet Council and function in the Krakoan government. They refuse. It turns out, they have something more important to focus on.
After a year of this great new X-Men experiment, Hickman appears to be setting up the fact that Krakoa needs its own superhero team of protectors.
There’s a twist, though. Magneto asks if they have decided on a team to which Cyclops explains…
That’s right folks it’s time to make X-Men political! All jokes aside, this is a fascinating idea and direction for the team considering the X-Men lineup is a hotly contested element for fans and it’s always exciting to see the different lineups creative teams come up with. This time, it’s in fellow mutant’s hands to decide.
What this means for the series remains to be seen and who knows if we’ll see mutants “run for office” or give speeches, but needless to say this is an exciting new direction for a superhero team. It also makes sense given the Krakoan lifestyle has changed mutant life forever.
In the final page of the comic, we get to see what looks like a political poster that features Cyclops asking mutants to “Rock the Vote.” Check it out below.
Eagle-eyed readers will note the text below the poster gives us some details on how the election will function. Not only will the Quiet Council members not be allowed to be nominated, but there appear to be 6 parties in Krakoa from each region. We also learn the team will be unveiled during the next Hellfire Gala. Exciting stuff.
