[Sundance ’21] ‘Bambirak’ review: A moving family story

Excellent characters and storytelling create a memorable film

Zamarin Wahdat’s Bambirak is a father/daughter story about love and facing the cruel realities of society. Lara hides in her father’s truck so he is forced to take her along on her deliveries, along the way they discover new sides to each other. The short film is playing at the Sundance Film Festival.

Faruk (Kailas Mahadevan) is an immigrant from Afghanistan who is adjusting to a new job and new country to work in. Kati (Lara Cengiz) is a curious little girl who wants to see what her father does. Despite the inconvenience, Faruk seems to enjoy spending the day with his daughter. Their bond is hurt when Kati is discriminated against. The performances in this scene are particularly powerful. Mahadevan exudes so much anger and shame as Faruk takes a stance that surprises Kati. Mahadevan and Cengiz are amazing here as they deal with issues of trust and racism.

Bambirak is an impactful short film with layers of depth and history in its 13 minute run time.
