“A” for Alpha is a short film that explores gender roles. Harrison (Reggie Lochard who also wrote the film) lives with his girlfriend Vanessa (DeShawn White) who is a high powered attorney. The problem as Harrison sees it is he is not doing his job as a man. As their anniversary approaches, Harrison grapples with his role in his relationship.
The short deals with a topic that is becoming increasingly important in today’s world. The dynamics in relationships are constantly changing and “A” for Alpha handles the subject with honesty and maturity. In previous years, the women in the relationship being more “dominant” was either played for laughs or seen as odd. While social norms are different now, Harrison grew up being taught a man is expected to do certain things. “A” for Alpha has a grounded vibe that is relatable.
This does not mean it is not without humor. It is laugh out loud funny at times. The film makes sure that even in moments of levity, it never loses its core message. This all leads to an emotional exchange. “A” for Alpha manages to bring laughs without downplaying its overall message.
