‘God Country’ film coming soon from AfterShock Media & Legendary

‘God Country’ is coming soon adapted by Donny Cates from his own series and directed by Jim Mickle.

Yesterday, Deadline revealed Jim Mickle will be directing the film adaptation of Donny Cates’ series God Country. Produced by Legendary and AfterShock Media, the film will be made from a script adapted by Cates himself. Lee Kramer and Jon Kramer from AfterShock Media will produce along with Jim Mickle and Linda Moran.

God Country was originally published by Image Comics in 2017 and follows an elderly widower named Emmett Quinlan who suffers from dementia, but soon is restored thanks to a tornado and an enchanted sword. You can read all about the first issue in our review.

Mickel is on a hot streak currently as he’s the co-creator and co-writer of Netflix’s smash hit Sweet Tooth which released last week on June 4th. Previously Mickle directed the films In the Shadows of the Moon, Cold in July, and We are What WE Are. He also co-created and directed the TV series Hap and Leonard for Sundance TV and AMC.

So what’s God Country about?

In GOD COUNTRY, Emmett Quinlan is an elderly widower rattled by dementia. Emmett isn’t just a problem for his children–his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home–as well as the surrounding West Texas town–a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. An enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him not just a sound mind and body, but phenomenal power. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State in a film that will bring a Western aesthetic to the super hero genre.
