[CFF ’21] ‘Denervation’, ‘Bed’, and ‘The Grave of Saint Oran’ offer a taste of what the Chattanooga Film Fest has to offer

The Chattanooga Film Fest has an interesting slate of short films screening at this year’s virtual event. The topics range from serious topical issues to themes that allow an escape from the real world. The films run the gamut when it comes to genre cinema and there is something for everyone to enjoy. Here are just a few of those ones we have seen.

Denervation

The best horror films take from unfamiliar but real issues. They are the kind of situations that you think cannot exist and are shocked to discover are genuine. Denervation is an animated short about a deadly outbreak that forces people to wear masks. It immediately sounds almost too familiar. 

It is not about Covid-19, however. Denervation is a real condition that refers to when a person’s nerve supply is not functioning correctly. In filmmaker Joshua Dawson’s film, the problem is a result of an ingredient of a beauty product. The short is a poignant look at the importance placed on looks. It also touches on elitism and the environment. Its slice of life documentary feel and crisp animation will catch the eye as it delivers its message.

Bed

Genre films have always been willing to take on strange subjects. Bed is about a woman named Madeline who lives in fear of the titular piece of furniture. Things have become so bad, she has shut herself off from the outside world with serious consequences. Using little dialogue, Bed highlights the film’s terror. As the plot progresses, what seems like an attempt to overcome fear turns into something far more sinister.

The Grave of Saint Oran

A mix of paper cutouts, stop motion animation, and narration from Neil Gaiman will catch the eye before it even begins. The short is about two saints who come to the Irish island of Iona to build a chapel. Things soon take a violent turn. The animation and Gaiman’s voice are a perfect match. The simple yet beautiful style of the art is beautiful while Gaiman helps add to the atmosphere and mystery.

The Chattanooga Film Festival takes place from June 24 – June 29
