‘Blood Born’ review: Pregnancy horror is not what you think

RockaDIE baby.

Blood Born has nothing to do with the much loved video game. It is a horror movie that is more along the lines of Rosemary’s Baby. Still, a pregnancy thriller with a popular video game’s name does not sound like the best combination – especially when a movie with a similar plot was released within the past month.

Makayla (Rosie Moss) and Eric’s (Antoine Perry) attempts to have children have ended in four miscarriages. They soon meet a doula who has a magical solution to help them. Before long, they are introduced to a charming and dangerous doctor. With little convincing, they are committing shocking acts in order to start a family.

Blood Born lacks the subtlety normally found in the sub genre. From the failed pregnancies to the methods to correct them, writer-director Reed Shusterman goes all in. It is a slightly different take on the premise. That being said, there is not much gore in the film.

The performances are good with Melanie Haynes leading the role way as Ola, the person who can solve the couple’s problem. As ridiculous as Blood Born can get, it is hard not to enjoy the scenes with Ola. She has a powerful presence that helps each scene she is in.

The film finds its way during the final act. The scares become more effective and the tension rises. Blood Born is at its best leading towards the finale. Unfortunately, the movie runs out of steam (and money) in its final moments. Blood Born lacks the satisfying conclusion it deserves.

Blood Born arrives on digital July 16
