‘Jolt’ review: Kate Beckinsale electrifies in kick ass comedy

That’s not where those go.

Jolt is an exciting combination of action movies that will give adrenaline junkies the rush they enjoy. Kate Beckinsale stars as a woman named Lindy with a unique condition. She can get a little too emotional at times. So much so, she is easily driven into homicidal rages. Thankfully, she wears a vest fitted with electrodes to stop herself from hurting anyone. When a new man she meets is brutally murdered, she goes on the hunt for revenge.

The movie instills a spirit of fun right from the onset. It is a dark humor Jolt is presenting, but it also makes it clear the film is not going to take itself too seriously. This is a smart move since the premise already requires a heavy suspension of disbelief. Once the story begins proper, Jolt kicks into high gear. Watching Lindy attempt to deal with her rage is a mix of comedy and violence. These bloody windows into what she is thinking are preparation for what the film offers up later on.

The action scenes are fun, but surprisingly quick. There are some great fight scenes – especially towards the end – but much of the action is straight and to the point. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as building tension is never an important part of Jolt. This is most noticeable in two key moments. One involves a car battery in a way that would make Shane McMahon shiver. This is even more obvious is the ending of Jolt. After a stunning twist, the final battle ends swiftly.

These missteps are little more than minor inconveniences. Beckinsale gives a spirited performance and reminds all of what a great action star she is. She is charming, funny, and a complete badass. Jai Courtney is instantly likeable. A not altogether surprising cameo teases there will be more from the neon hued world of Jolt. By the end, most audiences will be eager for more.

Jolt comes to Prime Video July 23
