After wrapping up a mythology-heavy arc (rife with gimmicks and convoluted plot points), X-Files: Season 10 takes on a supernatural mystery. Is it good?
The X-Files: Season 10 #16 (IDW Publishing)
The story dives right into the controversial side of the pool as a pregnant woman marches past angry protestors into an abortion clinic. Their anger at the young woman is soon proven to be displaced, however, when she uses whatever was inside of her placenta to blow the place to smithereens.
“Everyone evacuate the building! It’s another one of Russ Whiting’s ex-girlfriends!”
The bizarre explosion, along with a shadowy entity spotted on the surveillance video (which somehow survived the inferno) brings Mulder and Scully on board to figure things out. If you’ve read any type of horror/supernatural fiction at all, you know that things are going to get weird and demony…but not in the way that you’d expect.
By the issue’s end, lots of people have stabbed out their eyes, the obvious answer for the evil’s source has been cast in doubt, and the real menace appears to be more “directly involved” than your run of the mill hellspawn.
Is It Good?
Now this is more like it.
I love this franchise’s mythology as much as next X-Phile, but X-Files: Season 10 has fumbled the ball a bit with those stories. Where it has often exceled, however, is with tales like one. The plot is still a little disjointed at times, but in a way that leaves you wanting to know more instead of throwing up your hands and screaming “SERIOUSLY?!”
Writer Joe Harris does an exceptional job giving us a story involving the forces of heaven and hell (or really just hell for now) that would creep out even the most jaded reader of supernatural fiction.
Colin Lorimer’s wonderful and atmospheric pencils definitely deserve a large share of the credit, but in the end, Harris is back to doing what he does best: Telling good stories that send a chill down your spine (without bringing back multiple dead characters from the television show).
