Welcome to another edition of Fantastic Five, where we take a look back at all the single-issue comic books reviewed this week at AIPT to determine the best comics of the week based on their score. Despite some shipping delays, Marvel delivered several truly top-tier books this week, landing three spots in the top five. They are joined by a great Batman story and an alternate universe Transformers tale.

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: IG-88 #1
Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: IG-88 is an example of how Star Wars comics enrich characters who are often given very little screen time. It’s also an example of how there is heart and soul in any character, no matter if they are flesh and blood or metal and oil. It’s a sympathetic story about a killer robot that surprises, delights, and makes you think.

Daredevil #35
The penultimate issue of Chip Zdarsky’s excellent Daredevil is a great issue that took me back to the issues right before Marvel’s Civil War event. The groundwork is laid, and I can see how this builds to Mayor Fisk’s big move for the upcoming Devil’s Reign event. I loved how Elektra was spotlighted as a hero, which shows her growth. And as always, the art department on this book delivers astonishing sights!

Transformers: Shattered Glass #3
Everybody loves a good mirror universe, and when it’s done this well, it’s obvious why Shattered Glass was, and remains, a fan favorite part of Transformers. Another good issue exploring one of the best characters in the book.

Inferno #2
Jonathan Hickman leans on Mystique and Destiny’s romance as the emotional core for this blockbuster X-Men story, which seems set for a fiery conclusion. I’m already wondering how Hickman will be able to wrap this up (and why Marvel did not extend this series by a few issues).

Detective Comics #1044
Overall, I can only say that I adore this book, if that wasn’t obvious enough. It’s been a long time since I’ve truly loved a Batman title like I love this run, and that’s no small praise from me. Tamaki’s Bruce feels like my Bruce, and paired with a truly superb artist like Dan Mora, and other extremely talented folks for the backups, I couldn’t ask for a better DC book right now. Now I just have to hope it lasts the rest of my natural life, or until the creatives feel it’s right to end.
