[SXSW ’22] The hottest showings at SXSW

Two years ago South by Southwest was stopped in its tracks. It is back in full force this year as there are lots of movies and television shows that will be coming to SXSW. From returning shows like Atlanta to world premieres like The Lost City, are just part of the fun coming to Austin. For the third straight year, AIPT we will be covering the event. Here are some of the things we are looking most forward to.

Jules Cabot

The Girl from Plainville

Last year, SXSW Online was full of great television premieres, and this year, I am really looking forward to The Girl from Plainville. Elle Fanning is transformed into Michelle Carter, subject of HBO’s I Love You, Now Die; Michelle was convicted of manslaughter in 2017 for the suicide of her boyfriend. Being a local case, this one has held some fascination for me (and many people I know), and I can’t wait to see what direction this show goes in.

The Cellar

Even though it is not a strictly genre film festival, SXSW has a history of showing some great horror. Already acquired by Shudder and RLJE Films, this Irish horror flick is set to make its World premiere at SXSW. Starring Elisha Cuthbert, the film is about a woman whose daughter disappears in the cellar of their home. She must face the evil she finds or risk losing her family’s souls.

A Lot of Nothing

Stories about people taking justice into their own hands is nothing new. This is especially true in today’s ultra confrontational world. This movie is about a seemingly perfect married couple who see their neighbor committing a crime on the evening news and decide they must do something about it. Unsurprisingly, things do not go quite as they planned leading to more problems.

Regina Chavez Muir

The Cow

Winona Ryder and Dermot Mulroney star in this horror film about a couple who ends up rooming with a younger couple during a getaway in the woods after they are double booked. Things take a turn when one half of each couple go missing and it’s up to those left behind to figure out what happened. The Cow is making its world premiere at this year’s SXSW film festival. 

Pirates

New Year’s Eve 1999 was a frightening and exciting time. No one knew whether it would be the end of everything or a new beginning. The story follows three friends looking for a proper party to end the millennium. It is a fun set up for a coming of age story that sounds like it will have a great soundtrack and bring back some amazing memories.
