‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #92 is a good Misty Knight and Colleen issue

Spider-Man must face a Lizard with wings and Ben Reilly seeks his memories.

Spider-Man fights a lizard bat, Ben Reilly wants his memories back, and Misty Knight and Colleen Wing are having the times of their lives. Just another issue of Amazing Spider-Man with issue #92 progressing the plot forward in an action-focused issue. Spinning out of Amazing Spider-Man #91, can Spidey escape the clutches of a new Lizard?

Plotted by Kelly Thompson with a script by Jed MacKay, this issue has a similar vibe as Amazing Spider-Man #78.BEY with Colleen and Misty Knight stealing the show. They’re having the times of their lives like some kind of rollercoaster addict, only, in this case, they’re fighting a 12 foot tall Lizard. If you dig this duo, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this issue.

Spider-Man also gets play time here, with another callback as he fights living sandwiches. The Beyond Corporation has been experimenting and making abominations and Spider-Man gets to face that first hand.

The backbone of this issue rests with Ben Reilly, who fled in the last issue and continues to seek his memories back. He’s been reeling for a few weeks now after the Beyond Corporation stole his memories and he just wants to be whole again. His trauma comes off as real and you’ll feel for him. It’s starting to become clearer now the Beyond era of Spider-Man comics was more about Ben Reilly figuring out what he wants in life, especially with his girlfriend Janine becoming a larger factor.

Customary of bi-weekly or in this case thrice-weekly comics, this issue is drawn by three artists. Fran Galan, Sara Pichelli, and Ze Carlos all contribute to the issue which unfortunately gives the art a middling quality. It’s not bad, but it’s also not consistent with some pages looking more like rough sketches.

The scenes with Maxine Danger are cleaner, though, and the ongoing drama of her role as the biggest villain of the series continues. Maxine may come out of this era as the most interesting of the bunch as her role becomes clearer here.

There’s a rather epic moment involving Misty and Colleen’s car that’ll have fans cheering. Drawn very well, you get the sense of the weight of the vehicle and how massive Lizard is in this new form. Colors by Brian Reber have a darker tone that suits the narrative.

This issue also feels like a thinner chapter all told. When serial stories in comics get produced so often you tend to see single issues tread less ground and that’s evident here. Heck, even the Lizard plot doesn’t get finalized.

Letters by Joe Caramagna are great with a fantastic set of sound effects to enjoy in this issue. There are quite a few panels where the sound effects seem more prominent than usual, in fact.

Amazing Spider-Man #92 is a good, not great transitional issue. As we approach the end of the larger story it’s obvious the narrative is biding its time by playing out some side stories here, but heck, it’s filled with fun comic book moments. From sound effects to attacking sandwiches, it’s a good time.

Is held together by Ben Reilly's ongoing trauma and the fun Colleen and Misty Knight are having
The car sequence is well drawn
Art feels rushed here with sound effects seemingly going bigger to cover that up
Not a lot of meaningful stuff happens
