‘Deep in the Forest’ review: Holds a mirror to society

Should feel more important.

Deep in the Forest is a not so subtle commentary on the current state of affairs in the country. How else can you explain the plot that has a divided America that includes a group known as the Democratic Club? The movie revolves around a diverse group of strangers that must come together to fight off armed intruders. But in order to defeat the invaders, they have to overcome their personal differences.

The film is to the point and never deviates from its course. While these leads to moments of predictability, it also makes for a tight story. Deep in the Forest never loses it way and even manages to includes some interesting character dynamics. This is most obvious in some of the moral choices that have to be made.

Deep in the Forest has something important it wants to say and it knows it. This leads to plenty of exposition dumps and social commentary made through jokes. It works at times, but often it feels like the script is just going through the motions. It is never bad, but it also does not connect like it should.

None of this takes away from the poignant ending, however. The writing does not make it easy to get there, but the finale is the highlight of Deep in the Forest. Along with driving home it point, the final moments also tie up loose strings introduced early on.

Deep in the Forest is a topical story that anyone who watches will understand. As relevant as its themes may be, the movie never quite makes the impression it needs to. Aside from its strong conclusion, it has little going for it.
