CM Punk announces injury on Rampage; Interim AEW World Champion to be decided

CM Punk will remain Champion, but an interim champ will be decided while he recovers from surgery.

CM Punk took the stage on AEW: Rampage to announce that he has suffered an injury that requires surgery. He will remain the AEW World Champion, but an interim champion will be decided at Forbidden Door.

CM Punk had just won the championship this past Sunday at Double or Nothing to the elation of most of wrestling’s community as it not only ended the nearly ten-year championship drought for the wrestler, but opened up many intriguing potential storylines and matches for The Second City Saint. After all, what would have happened when “Hangman” Adam Page came for his rematch? What would have happened if Page, Eddie Kingston, and MJF were proven right and CM Punk was in fact “nothing but a snake” and turned on the fans? Hell, how would his already announced match with Hiroshi Tanahashi have played out at Forbidden Door? Unfortunately, may never get an answer to those questions as CM Punk must step away from the ring to recuperate.

Where do we go from here? Well, this isn’t the first time that Tony Khan and the AEW powers that be came out swinging. There will be a battle royale this coming Wednesday on Dynamite. The winner of that will face Jon Moxley, and the winner of that match will face Tanahashi at Forbidden Door for the interim AEW World Heavyweight Championship. Not a bad rebound but still, it’s a devastating blow to AEW fans, not to mention Punk himself. Not only because of the, you know, injury, but the veteran wrestler seemed to be in such a happy, positive headspace. It came to see his ride on cloud nine ended so quickly and abruptly, but we here at AIPT are sure that he will come back stronger.

Wishing you a speedy recovery Mr. Punk!
