Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of April 5, 2023

Our weekly countdown of the very best comics of the week.

Welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five, where we give props to the very best comics of the week! This week was a particularly stellar one for comics, with an astounding three perfect 10s doled out by AIPT’s reviewers. Let’s take a look at the top five comics of the week:

#5: Planet of the Apes #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of April 5, 2023

Planet of the Apes #1 is how every good science fiction comic should start out: a compelling story, eye-catching visuals, and a clear appreciation for the source material. It also continues to follow in the Predator and Alien comics’ footsteps of taking bold new steps with licensed material.

#4: Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #11

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of April 5, 2023

Lanzing and Kelly are certainly still having fun in their sandbox, but Carmen Carnero’s pencils are not to be overlooked. She was certainly a great artist on Hellions, which was undoubtably one of the best books of the Krakoa era, but she’s really letting her creativity soar to new heights with Sentinel of Liberty.  The action sequences shine once more and her panel layout is beyond eye catching. This is truly shaping up to be one of the great Cap runs in every category.

#3: Scarlet Witch #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of April 5, 2023

Scarlet Witch #4 is another stellar issue of what is set to become one of the Scarlet Witch’s definitive solo series. Orlando, Pichelli, D’Amico, and Wilson give us the backstory and reveals we have been waiting for while setting up what seem to be very action-heavy future issues. This series continues to add new elements to both the Scarlet Witch’s mythos and the greater Marvel Universe’s mythos, while also staying familiar and accessible to fans of Wanda from both the comics and MCU.

#2: Barnstormers #5

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of April 5, 2023

Subtle, beautiful, and vague, Barnstormers #5 is worthy to sit along the greats of outlaws-on-the-run fiction.

#1: Hairball #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of April 5, 2023

Hairball #1 is a striking first issue for what could be an ambitious miniseries by Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, and Hilary Jenkins. What happens to Anna and her mother is unknown for now, but it’s safe to say that there is no escaping your family, even your chosen family. No one can escape the omens of a black cat.
