At this year’s Star Wars Celebration, LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced that the franchise will be returning to the silver screen.
According to a report from Borys Kit and Alex Ritman of the Hollywood Reporter, there are three movies going into production that focus on various/distinct eras of Star Wars lore:
- Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) will direct a film featuring Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. The story will revolve around her attempts to establish a new Jedi Academy.
- Dave Filoni will direct a film that acts as a culmination of the storylines in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
- James Mangold (Logan) will direct a film exploring the origins of the Force that takes place 25,000 years before any of the franchise’s movies/shows. According to Ritman and Kit’s report, Mangold described his upcoming film as a “Biblical epic.”
I’ve never been a huge fan of stories that take place before the Republic Era, but plenty of folks are. That said, even I find the idea/concept of Mangold’s project to be all types of interesting.
With regard to Filoni’s movie, no additional explanation is required to generate excitement.

And then we come to Obaid-Chinoy’s film about Rey. No matter what your feelings are about the Sequel Trilogy, there’s no denying that Daisy Ridley is an outstanding actress. There’s a boatload of potential for a movie featuring her character in a fresh setting like this.
No release dates or additional casting information was revealed at Celebration, but that news should start trickling out soon.
