Star Wars Celebration kicked off on Friday and the event didn’t waste any time in showing big reveals at their Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase. Amongst the news of their upcoming various projects was more details regarding the new Ahsoka series.
At the panel, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni shared that Ahsoka will premiere August 2023 exclusively on Disney+. The current description of the show is as follows:
Set after the fall of the Empire, “Ahsoka” follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
Rosario Dawson, who plays the titular character, came on stage to share a teaser poster for the series.
She was then joined onstage by co-stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. At last year’s event, it was confirmed Bordizzo would be playing the live-action version of Sabine Wren, who was a member of the Spectres that appeared on Star Wars Rebels. We now know that Winstead will play her fellow Ghost crewmate, Hera Syndulla.
The presentation ended with a teaser trailer for Ahsoka. There’s so much to dissect from a short two-minute video. We have plenty of familiar faces from Star Wars Rebels including the aforementioned Sabine and Hera. In addition, we see the astromech Chopper and what looks like a hologram of Ezra Bridger, who will be played by Eman Esfandi. Though not from Rebels, the closing moments present Huyang stating, “Perhaps it is time to begin again.” The droid first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and was responsible for helping youngling padawans construct their lightsabers and was a treasure trove of Jedi history. Could we see the beginning of a new Jedi Order?
Heroes always need good villains and we have plenty in the teaser as well. There are glimpses of Imperial Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth, who Ahsoka already crossed paths with in The Mandalorian. More importantly, we see Grand Admiral Thrawn, albeit from behind. He is the true target, and he is even described as the “heir to the Empire,” which is the title of the book he made his first appearance, although that is now part of Star Wars Legends.
Another pair that look to be trouble is Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll and Ivanna Sakhno’s Shin Hati. They seem to be able to wield the force and battle with lightsabers. Baylan even comes face to face with our hero engaging in a duel. Regardless, they will be formidable force to be reckoned with.
Don’t miss Ahsoka when it releases in August 2023 on Disney+.
